Furniture in guest rooms is always subject to wear and tear. An accidental knock here, a scuff there. When your existing guest beds or day beds are beginning to look tired, you have two options – spruce them up to get a little longer out of them, or upcycle them into something new and invest in new frames.

Here are some top tips for how to jazz up an old bed.

Revamp

If you have a metal or wood bed frame, giving it a new lease of life could be as simple as administering a little bit of TLC. Repainting a metal frame can bring it up to date immediately, while a wooden frame can be sanded down, repaired and painted or stained to bring it back to life.

If you’re going to choose this option, ensure you clean the bed frame thoroughly first and sand off any existing paint. If you’re updating a wooden frame, use wood filler to repair deeper scratches or other damage before sanding. You can then stain or paint the frame to make it look as good as new.

This technique will work with a range of beds, from fixed ones to double day beds – as long as you can take the frame apart to properly refurbish each piece, it’s a great option if you need to save money.

Upcycle

You may feel that your current bed is no longer fit for the guest room and you’ll need to invest in a new one. If that’s the case, don’t just head straight for the tip – there are plenty of things you can do to upcycle the old frame.

The headboard or footboard of a frame can be used in a variety of ways, for example as the back piece to a new garden bench. With a little DIY skill and some creativity, you can make and attach a seat to the board and upholster it to make a comfy seat for the garden. If your old bed is a day bed, you can simply take away the mattress and replace it with a weatherproof cushion to make an instant outdoor seat.

Head and footboards can also be used for a variety of purposes, such as coat racks, ornate shelving, or even coffee tables. Pet owners sometimes turn old beds into doggy beds so their pooch can sleep comfortably.
